The brand GJAV® includes 8 sports supplements for athletes, each of which is characterized by a particular composition, that make it suitable for a specific phase of the sporting activity and for different types of physical efforts.

GJAV is the first line of Italian food sport supplements suitable for athletes and for vegan (excluding Omegreen!); certified gluten free, lactose free, GM free, doping tested and packed to Zero Impact® on the environment.
Food supplements for sportsmen GJAV contain pH alcalin®, that is a mixture of alkaline mineral salts. This is excellent in absorbing sugars and amino acids.

Food supplements suitable for runners, triathletes and rugby players are formulated to be taken before, during and after the training.

PREWORKOUT! is characterized by a high content of creatine citrate, amino acid involved in energy production during the initial stages of muscular work. In fact, in addition to the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, during physical exertion the energy can also be produced from the breakdown of phosphocreatine (which accumulates in muscles from creatine), through a very quick reaction that does not require oxygen and does not produce lactic acid . This mechanism of ATP production is very rapid and efficient in terms of energy production, but it rapidly consume the phosphocreatine reserves of the muscles, so it is able to support an intense and of short duration muscular work, such as that required in sports of strength and power, in which it can be useful to have an available boost energy in a very short time1. The supplement also contains beta-alanine, precursor for synthesis of carnosine. This substance, present in high concentrations in muscle, neutralizes the lactic acid formed during the anaerobic work, contributing to confer a greater resistance during intense and prolonged physical activity and promoting muscle recovery2. It also contains B group vitamins (B6, B3, B1, B12), vitamin C and pH alcalin®, a specially designed blend of alkalizing mineral salts (magnesium, potassium anda calcium).

POSTWORKOUT! contains a mixture of essential amino acids and detoxifying substances like l-glutammine, Ornithine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, alpha lipoic acid  as well as dextrose complex polysaccharides (maltodextrin), releasing energy gradually over time. This composition can be used for promoting recovery and muscle restore after intense and prolonged activity. It also contains B group vitamins (B6, vitamin B1, B12), vitamin C and pH alcalin®, a specially designed blend of alkalizing mineral salts.

WORKOUT! it is a product containing branched chain amino acids, involved in the processes of energy production from proteins. During very intense and prolonged physical activities (e.g. endurance sports) there is a strong increase in muscle catabolism, due in part to the use of proteins for energy production, leading to the reduction of branched amino acids reserves in the muscles. These amino acids are important in the recovery phase after a prolonged endurance activity3, since they are essential amino acids and are the first components of proteins to be used for energy purposes in case of carbohydrates deficiency. It also includes B group vitamins (vitamin B6, vitamin B12), vitamin C and pH alcalin®, a specially designed blend of alkalizing mineral salts.

PROCOMPETITION! it is a hypotonic saline supplement with minerals and complex carbohydrates for slow energy release (isomaltulose and maltodextrin), that can be used during intense and prolonged physical activity to counteract the effects of excessive sweating. The composition also comprises vitamin B1, vitamin C and pH alcalin® (potassium, magnesium and calcium) a specially designed blend of alkalizing mineral salts.

LIKEPROTEIN! sports supplement with essential amino acids, used to stimulate and support protein synthesis. During prolonged, intense physical activity, there is a depletion of muscle proteins, which are then restored by means of an accelerated process of protein synthesis.At this recovery and growth stage, the muscles need to have a sufficient availability of essential amino acids, that represent the “building blocks” for the construction of proteins. The product also contains vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.

As can be seen from the supplements compositions, all GJAV® line products contain B vitamins, including B6 and B12, present in significant quantities in all supplements, except PROCOMPETITION!. These vitamins are important cofactors in many metabolic reactions leading to energy production of from nutrients. In fact, the high energy demand in athletes who practice strenuous sports activities can result in a state of deficiency of B vitamins, lowering the level of athletic performance4.
Moreover, GJAV® supplements are a valuable source of vitamin B12, mainly of bacterial origin and present in foods of animal origin, while it is practically absent in plants. For this reason athletes who follow a vegan diet undergo significant lack of this important factor, which therefore must be supplemented.

Acid-base balance

The very intense sporting activities, that require great energy expenditure, tend to alter the acid-base balance of the body, due to excessive production of acidic metabolites (e.g. lactic acid), with a consequent tendency to a permanent state of acidosis. It has been proven that a protracted state of acidosis, as well as having a significant negative impact on athletic performance, can lead to the formation of renal calculi and to a calcium metabolism alteration resulting in bone fragility5. GJAV® supplements were tested to evaluate their acid-neutralizing capacity and the PRAL (Potential Renal Acid Load) value was also calculated for each product.

The alkalizing capacity measurement of the supplements was performed according to the “Acid- Neutralizing Capacity” – USP XXIII, official in vitro test method described in the United States Pharmacopeia, that allows measurement of the buffering capacity of compounds: the higher the value obtained, the more effective is the product in the neutralization of acids. The result is a direct measure of the quantity of bases present in the product.
Calculate PRAL of a food product means to perform an estimate of the balance between its acidifying and alkalizing components, assessing the potential ability to form acids and bases once the product has been absorbed and metabolized. The PRAL value was calculated according to the method proposed and validated for food by Remer and Manz6, that takes into account the endogenous production of acids and bases in relation to the content and intestinal absorption capabilities of minerals and sulfur amino acids involved.
The formula, adapted as reported by Zwart SR et al.7 to be applied to food supplements, take into account the contribution of minerals (phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium) and sulfur amino acids for the production of acids and bases once absorbed and metabolized by the body. Products and foods with negative PRAL have a predominantly alkalizing character (e.g. fruit and vegetables), while a positive PRAL value indicates that the products have a predominantly acidifying composition (e.g. meat). The PRAL value offers a prediction of the ability of a product as a whole to acidify or alkalize the body, once it is absorbed and metabolized.

Although sports supplements GJAV® are not designed to be primarily supplements with alkalizing properties, they present, with the exception of MUSCLEMASS! and LIKEPROTEIN!, a significant negative PRAL per daily dose. This means that the assumption of a dose of WORKOUT!, PROCOMPETITION! or PREWORKOUT! helps to counteract an acidosis state as much as, for example, 100 g of spinach, 300 g of zucchini or 700 g of apples (!).
That GJAV® supplements are not in the strict sense alkalizing products is shown by their relative value of acid-neutralizing capacity, except perhaps WORKOUT!, which showed a discrete value. However, they have the advantage, with the only exception of PREWORKOUT!, of being sodium ree. In fact, the specific alkalizing supplements generally contain significant amount of sodium bicarbonate, which gives the product a high immediate alkalinizing power, but that after prolonged use may lead to the onset of problems related to the excess of sodium introduced into the body (e.g. . kidney problems, high blood pressure, renal calculi).
Supplements WORKOUT!, PROCOMPETITION!, PREWORKOUT! and POSTWORKOUT! contain a mixture of mineral salts, called pH alcalin®, specially designed to confer to the products a significant alkalizing action without using bases containing sodium.
